North Sydney Council is promoting car share schemes as part of its ongoing commitment to managing parking more efficiently and supporting more sustainable transport choices.

Under the Car Share Policy, car share schemes are designed to reduce the number of privately owned vehicles on local streets, easing pressure on parking and helping to make better use of limited on-street parking space.

The model works by allowing multiple users to access a single vehicle when needed. This reduces the need for households and businesses to own and store private cars, and supports a range of travel options, particularly for residents who primarily walk, cycle or use public transport but require occasional access to a vehicle.

Local officials said car share schemes also provide broader community benefits by helping to reduce congestion caused by drivers searching for parking, and improving parking availability for residents, visitors and local businesses.

The Car Share Policy outlines how North Sydney will provide car share parking spaces and balance competing parking demands across the North Sydney local government area. It sets out how new car share parking locations are assessed, including consultation with nearby residents and businesses, to balance local parking needs with the wider community benefits of reduced car ownership and more efficient use of kerbside space.

By supporting car share schemes, the Council aims to promote flexible transport options that can lower household transport costs, reduce reliance on private vehicles and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing traffic and vehicle emissions.
