Milsons Point’s Wild Mouse Returns After Two-Year Restoration

At Milsons Point, Luna Park’s Wild Mouse roller coaster is ready to thrill riders again after a two-year restoration, bringing a cherished slice of Sydney’s history back to life.

This heritage-listed ride, one of only a handful surviving worldwide, has been painstakingly restored to its original 1963 layout and still meets present-day safety regulations. The much-awaited reopening takes place on Friday, 14 March 2025.

A Ride Through History

Wild Mouse has long been a Luna Park Sydney favourite, providing an exciting, spinning, and gravity-free ride with stunning harbour views. First installed in 1963, the attraction was removed in 1969 and later restored in 1995 and listed on the heritage register.

In contrast to modern roller coasters, the Wild Mouse features individual cars instead of a train. It offers an isolated experience per ride with extreme bends, steep drops, and an exhilarating burst of speed. The 400-metre steel track is abnormally supported by wooden towers in accordance with its era of construction.

Restoring an Icon

The $2 million restoration balanced heritage preservation with modern safety standards. Engineers, fitters, welders, and heritage experts worked to restore the ride to its original condition while reinforcing it with contemporary engineering and electrical upgrades.

Luna Park Sydney CEO John Hughes emphasized that the project preserves the park’s heritage while ensuring its appeal for future generations. The ride now meets Australian safety standards, offering the same adrenaline rush that has made the Wild Mouse a legend for decades.

A Community Celebration

The Wild Mouse’s return is a special occasion for Sydney residents and tourists alike. Those who rode the coaster as children are now coming back with their own children, providing a full-circle experience that brings together past and present.

Luna Park authorities have invited Sydneysiders to join them and enjoy the ride’s comeback. It’s described as an integral part of the city’s entertainment and cultural heritage.
