North Sydney Pool Revival Enters Final Stretch After Years Of Delays

North Sydney Pool is edging closer to its long-awaited return, with the historic harbourside swimming landmark now in its final preparation stage after years of delays, rising costs and major redevelopment works.

North Sydney Pool Edges Closer To Reopening

For more than five years, one of Sydney’s most recognisable harbour-side pools has sat out of public use while a major redevelopment reshaped the historic site beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

North Sydney Pool is now preparing to reopen to the public on Friday, 7 August 2026, during its 90th anniversary year. The milestone marks the final stretch for a project that began when the pool closed on 28 February 2021 for renovation works.

The pool first opened in 1936 and hosted swimming events during the 1938 Empire Games. Its position beside the harbour and below the bridge has made it one of Sydney’s most familiar public swimming locations, linking sport, recreation and heritage in one prominent site.

Historic Landmark Returns With New Facilities

The redeveloped North Sydney Pool will return with rebuilt grandstands, upgraded changerooms, a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, expanded children’s play area, gym and pilates studio.

The main 50-metre pool has also been fitted with a movable wall, allowing it to be divided into two 25-metre pools. Indoor pool facilities are also part of the renewed complex.

While much of the site has been rebuilt, selected heritage features remain. These include the southern wall and sundeck, along with surviving brickwork from the 1930s. The pool’s outer rim has been finished in a terracotta tone to match the remaining historic bricks.

Heritage stucco seashell reliefs are also being restored with colours linked to the original design, adding another visible connection between the renewed complex and its art deco past.

Years Of Delays And Rising Costs

The reopening follows a long redevelopment period marked by delays and a major increase in cost. The project was originally expected to reopen much earlier, with early cost estimates well below the final $122 million figure.

Technical issues involving the harbour water circulation system contributed to the delays, including pipework changes needed to support the required water flow.

An independent review also found the original budget was unrealistic because detailed construction plans had not been completed before contracts were signed.

Final Work Before Swimmers Return

The facility has now reached practical completion, moving the project from construction into the final preparation phase before public access resumes.

The remaining work includes fitting out indoor areas, installing equipment and furnishings, recruiting and training staff, setting up technology systems, testing plantrooms, finalising facility assessments and completing operating procedures. Remaining heritage restoration works are also due to be finished before opening day.

Guided preview tours are planned before the reopening, giving community members a chance to see the redeveloped facility ahead of regular public use.

Casual entry to the reopened pool is expected to cost $11, with multi-entry passes and gym memberships from $37 a week also expected to be available.

After years of closure, North Sydney Pool is now nearing its return as both a restored heritage landmark and an upgraded public swimming facility, bringing a familiar harbour-side site back into use for swimmers, families and visitors.
